The federal government needs more people in public service so it's attempting to do that using the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. What the federal government is now pushing is that college graduates who qualified for a federal student loan might have the ability to have their loans forgiven when they work hold federal jobs.
Any borrower who continues to work in a full-time capacity at a public service job may well apply for forgiveness after at least one hundred twenty payments were made on their loan while they were employed by chosen public service employers. However, only those previous students who had been paying since October 2007 can qualify for loan forgiveness. So these lucky individuals can start obtaining loan forgiveness cancellations on October 2017.
It will be only the payment of the Federal Direct Loan that can be qualified for that program under the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007. Any payments made before that period unfortunately don't qualify and neither do periods of deferment or forbearance.
The borrower might be employed with various government agencies like the federal or local government besides a member of Congress, with military and defense branches, together with the public health system, with public education, or with social work.
This forgiveness program would be available for any student that was able to acquire a Federal Direct PLUS Loan, a Federal Direct Consolidation Loan, or a Federal Direct Stafford Loan. Those who qualified for a Federal Family Education Loan Program or FFEL, the Parent PLUS or Grad PLUS, or the Perkins Loan have got to consolidate their loans before they can avail of the program.
Those currently under the Perkins Loan may well need to weigh the pros and cons here. There are wonderful benefits with Perkins, from a 9-month grace period to an inclusive loan forgiveness program.
There are several repayment schemes that could be used - from a standard repayment and the income contingent or income based repayment schemes or a combination of those three. The best choices would be income-based or contingent repayment so to make the most of this amount of forgiveness. One of the best parts of that loan? You don't pay taxes any for them.
