Pool Winterization on the GoTweetDate: Aug 12, 2010 | Views: 159 | Comments: 0 If you’re in a country that has four seasons you are lucky that you can enjoy the scenery of blooming flowers in spring, the warm nights in summer, the harvest time during autumn or fall and the cold breeze and the falling snow of winter, well, except for swimming pools and pool owners. Why? It’s a fact that winter can turn your crystal pool waters into crystal ice, however, not all pool owners realize this until it’s too late. Winter may not evidently damage your pool with its first “blow” but it will slowly deteriorate if not winterized properly. The perfect time to winterize your pool is fall but make sure that your pool has been cleaned-up already and prevent the falling leaves from entering your pool. Winter chemicals such as winter chlorine and akalizer are necessary to keep your pool clean during and after winter. However, every manufacturer has different directions on using your winterizing kit so keep an eye on the manual. Some pool winter chemicals will require you to turn your pool filter while they are added. Draining the pool is not a good idea, aside from it will cost you large amount of money; a water- free swimming pool during winter can develop brittleness of the pool walls after the cold season. On the other hand, adding pool chemicals will sometimes require you to slightly drain your pool in certain level. The skimmer and output holes will serve as your point of measurement; you can stop the draining until the water level is several inches below them. If draining is not mandatory, just cover the skimmer and output holes. Drain the filter after usage and store it properly in your garage or basement the entire winter. Leaving it outside throughout the cold season will eventually damage your pool especially if it’s left undrained. The last but not the least would be the installation of pool winter cover. But before you cover your pool you should put inflatable winter pillow in the middle of the pool. This pillow prevents the snow or ice and rainwater from forming on the pool winter cover and it will ease the pressure on the pool walls that is brought by frozen water. There you have it, quick guide for pool winterization. As long as you have the necessary equipments, the willingness to preserve the good condition of your pool and this article, pool winterization will not consume much of your time. Remember, it’s better to winterize your pool early than to be sorry.
