Law Enforcement Exam Tips

The law enforcement exam is something that you’re going to have to take if you are looking to get any sort of job at a police department. It’s not something that is standardized like the SATs. It is completely based on the discretions of each police department in the country and typically oriented toward their needs. With a growing population and retiring officers, there is typically always a need for new recruits to fill in the ranks. But society expects certain standards from the people selected. They don’t want lunatics with badges and guns running around. They want the best candidates possible. This means that the law enforcement exam is tough and has an incredibly high failure rate.

Over 70% of the people that you will see at your exam will end up failing. The 30% that pass, only a few of them will actually get a job, which means that you’re up against some stiff competition. Obviously the odds improve as your mark goes up. Typically those that end up getting the jobs are the ones that had the highest grades on their exam. This is something to keep in mind when you’re slacking on your studying.

The most important tip that I can give you is to pay attention to your writing style on the exam. You’re going to have to display excellent diction, spelling and grammar because that is what they’re looking for. Despite what you see in cop movies, officers will spend a lot of time sitting at a desk writing up reports. All these reports will be used in courts by judges and lawyers. There has to be a high standard or it could call in the credibility of your information.

Another important thing you need to know about the law enforcement exam is that you’re going to be faced with a lot of multiple choice questions. This should definitely change your style when studying. The great thing about multiple choice is that you don’t have to necessarily know the answer, you just need to know what is not the answer. Typically two of the answers are stupid, which means you have to determine which makes things a lot easier.
